Television: The Plug-ln Drug Marie Winn was born in 1936 in Prague, in what is now the Czech Repub- lic, and came to the United States in 1939. She was educated at Radcliffe College and Columbia University. As a freelance writer, Winn has con- tributed articles co the New York Times Magazine, Parade, and Smithsonian magazine.
The Plug-In Drug: Television, Children, and the Family (1977, revised 2002) was the first in a series of books by Winn about family in modern society; this excerpt is taken from that book. As you read, follow her sophisticated argument closely.

Marie Winn, the author of the essay “Television: The plug in drug” highly consider the consequences of the TV sets to the family, and she listed out the bad sides: children’s lives become more separate from their parents’, family’s life becomes increasingly more unsatisfying and more.
She has written on a variety of subjects, but she is probably best known for her three critiques of television's effects on children and families: The Plug-In Drug: Television, Children and Family (1977, revised 2002), from which the following selection was taken; Children Without Childhood (1983); and Unplugging the Plug-In Drug (1987).

The Plug-In Drug: Television, Children, And The Family is a book of social criticism written by Marie Winn and published in 1977 by Viking Penguin. In it, Winn brought the communications medium of television under withering fire, accusing it of wielding an addictive influence on the very young.
As one might guess from the title, The Plug-In Drug does not present a very favorable impression of the influence of television in our lives. The book decries televisions detrimental effects on individuals, families, and communities from every angle imaginable (at least by me).
Reading Mrs Winn's book is not necessarily a case of gaining knowledge in order to develop an understanding; it's more a case of awakening the instinctive common sense that we all know inside, but can't access without a 'key', due to the sheer weight of popular convention regarding the television. 'Plug-In Drug', for those people, is that 'key'.
